Cleaners' tips Print

Cleanser pH

The use of a cleanser depends on its pH-value. The neutral (pH 7) and alkaline (pH <7) cleansers work for "normal" dirt and stains, the acid (pH >7) cleansers for stains such as rust and chalk. The rule of thumb would be to use alkaline more often, acid seldom. If you don't know if acid cleanser is suitable, don't use it. An acid cleanser can cause a lot of damage. Acid cleansers are normally used in bathrooms.

For normal, common cleaning a neutral or mildly alkaline cleanser is very good. Washing liquid is suitable for many purposes. With washing liquid you can clean windows, oven, hot plates, fridge and freezer. Mix the washing liquid with water.

Window washing

You can borrow a window key from the Recreational Secretary during the office hours. You can also buy your own window key. Washing liquid is suitable for window cleaning. You can use a sgueegee to wipe of the water. The last drops are easy to remove with newspaper.

Cleaning the stove

Washing liquid is suitable to clean the whole stove, including oven and hot plates. Wipe the oven and the hot plates regularly, so that the stains don't burn or get stuck on the surfaces. When you wipe the surfaces after every use, you don't have to work so hard to rub off the stains later on!

If the stains are stuck or burnt, you can remove them by first dissolving the stains with water and then rubbing with a hard sponge. Dissolve so many times that the cleaning is easy.

Cleaning the sink and table surfaces

Wipe the sink and the surfaces with washing liquid mixed with water. Dissolve stains before rubbing, as many times as needed. You can rub the metal surfaces with a hard sponge.

Melting and cleaning fridge and freezer

The inside of the fridge and the freezer can be cleaned with washing liquid mixed with water. The fridge and the freezer should be melted at least once a year. Start melting by switching off the power. Open the door so that the fridge does not begin to smell. Wipe the melting water off with a cloth or by placing a bucket under the fridge and the freezer. When the ice has melted, wipe with washing liquid mixed with water.

Never use a knife or other sharp tools to cut off the ice! Do not use an electric device either. To speed up the melting you can rinse the insides of the fridge and the freezer with hot water.

Cleaning the floor drain

The floor drain gets blocked easily if you don't remove hair and dirt. Remove the cover and any visible dirt. Wash the drain from the inside by using for example an old dishbrush and/or washing gloves. Remove possible blockage. Brush the cover and replace.
