I didn’t manage to fill out an online application. What should I do? For using our online application forms you need to have a Finnish social security number. If you don’t have one, please fill out a regular paper application and deliver it to the Accommodation office either in person or through mail, fax or email. (N.B. If you’re an exchange / visiting student, you should apply for an apartment through the International office.) In case you’re already a Student village resident and wish to change apartments within the Student village, please fill out the Changing apartments form and deliver your application to the Accommodation office. I have received an apartment offer. Why weren’t all my wishes regarding the apartment taken into account? We do our best and try to consider all applicants’ wishes. However, due to variations in the number applications and vacant apartments we can’t necessarily take all wishes into account. You might, for instance, be offered a room in a shared apartment with more roommates than you originally wished for. This usually happens when we simply do not have an apartment to offer that would match your wishes completely and, therefore, offer something similar.
I got an apartment offer. It contained an invoice for the deposit. What does the deposit mean? The deposit must be paid by the due date in the offer. If the applicant does not pay the deposit, it is regarded as a sign of refusing to accept the apartment. The deposit must be paid by bank transfer. Cheques and credit card payments are not accepted. The deposit is the tenants' guarantee that they will take care of their responsibilities and take good care of the apartment. If the apartment is in good condition, the keys are returned on time and all responsibilities are taken care of, the deposit will be refunded to the bank account given by the tenant within two months after the lease has ended. The deposit cannot be used for the last rent.
Are the apartments furnished? Are there lamps in the apartments? Most of the rooms are rented unfurnished. Some furnished rooms are available, and for unfurnished rooms you can find some basic furniture in storage rooms (tutors help furnish apartments for exchange students). If you’d like to borrow the furniture, please call the 24 h maintenance service number (014 607 500) and one of the maintenance men will let you in the storage (on weekdays, between 16-19 hours). All our apartments are equipped with dome lamps. What does living in a shared apartment really mean? Shared apartments are apartments where each tenant has their own room with a lock but shares the kitchen, hallway and bathroom with the other tenants living in the same apartment. You and your roommates are together responsible for the tidiness of the common areas. All of these areas should be jointly cleaned when one of you moves out – this way it’ll be much nicer for a new roommate to move in! In the Student village, we have shared apartments for two, three or four people. Living in one is a great way to meet new people and make friends. This is particularly important if you’re just starting your studies. Getting to know your roommates might be the start of a lifelong friendship! When living in a shared apartment it’s important to consider your roommates’ wishes. For instance, for keeping a pet or subletting your room you must always have the permission of those you are sharing the apartment with. How fast can I get my own one-room apartment and move out of a shared one? You’re most likely to get your own one-room apartment during the second year of your studies. Remember to fill out the Changing apartments form and deliver it to the Accommodation office to start queuing for one! How does moving into the Student village play out in practice? You should visit us at the Accommodation office to sign your lease and pick up your keys. The keys to your apartment will be ready for you to pick up (at the latest) at 12 AM on the first weekday of the month your tenancy starts. In case you know you’ll be arriving in Jyväskylä late in the evening, outside the Accommodation office opening hours, you can inform us beforehand and arrange for a friend to fetch your keys. If you have a tutor, he or she can pick up the keys for you. Make sure to visit the Accommodation office to sign your lease on the very first weekday after your arrival if you didn’t pick up the keys yourself. How do I get to the Student village? See location on the map. The local bus no 18 takes you to the Taitoniekantie side, the bus no 25 to the Laajavuorentie side. What do I need to bring with me (exchange students)? You have a chance to borrow a survival kit, including basic kitchenware, mattress, duvet, pillow and sheets, from the Secretary of the Student village. What should I remember when getting settled in the Student village (exchange students)? You probably get your key and your survival kit (only exchange students) directly from your tutor. Within two weeks from your arrival you need to come to the Accommodation office to sign your lease. You also need to pay your survival kit to the Secretary of the Student village. Remember to check the ending date of your lease and make any necessary changes as soon as possible. Is it possible to change the ending date of a fixed term lease (exchange students)? Yes, it is. You can end your tenancy before the fixed term is over, but you must follow the general guidelines on the termination of tenancy. For instance, if you wish to pay your last rent in December and thus terminate your tenancy at the end of December, you need to deliver your notice in writing to the Accommodation office by the end of November. Please keep in mind that we’re absolutely strict when it comes to the term of notice. If you wish to continue to rent your apartment further, you must deliver the Accommodation office an official confirmation from the University that your studies will continue longer than earlier expected. Make sure to inform the Accommodation office well in advance of your wish to continue your tenancy – this way you will not have to change apartments and pay extra for the change. How do I go about paying my rent? Your rent includes water, electricity, heating, network connection and general sauna turns. Each tenant is personally responsible for their own rent, which is due by the 6th of each month. You should use your personal rent payment slip, which was either given to you when you signed your lease or delivered to your apartment mailbox. Make sure to always use your personal reference number to ensure the payment will be correctly registered. Using the reference number speeds up the payment process considerably and prevents possible errors. If you have lost your payment slip, please contact the Accommodation office for a new one.
In case you're experiencing temporary rent payment difficulties, contact the Accommodation office as soon as possible to find out whether any special arrangements are possible. When facing financial difficulties, it's also a good idea to check whether you're entitled to Kela's housing supplement / aid or income support provided by the city's social services. How do I get the network operating? Ensure that you have the right cable and settings. Connect your computer to the net and you will be automatically directed to the registration page. The registration takes a few days, so be patient. Especially in September and January there are a lot of people waiting for registration. For more information about the network and related issues go to www.kortex.jyu.fi/en.
Who should I contact when my internet connection is not working? If you have problems with your internet connection, contact the Student village's IT Support:

Are the apartments equipped with washing machine connections? The KLQRS buildings as well as some of the one-room apartments in the ABCDE buildings have washing machine connections. There are common laundry rooms in the BEFLNPR buildings, which area all equipped with several machines. (The laundry rooms in the F-building are only for the people living in the F-building.) What size are the windows, i.e. what length should my curtains be? Q building: height 213 cm, width 123 cm. RS buildings: height 185 cm, width 150 cm.
What kind of a converter box should I use? In the Student village, you should use a C-type converter box, which is compatible with our cable network.
I have reported a damage. Why hasn’t this been immediately attended to? All damage reports are attended to in order of importance. Damages that directly hinder living in the Student village are given first priority and others are fixed as soon as possible.
I locked myself out of my apartment. What should I do? You can borrow a spare key from the Accommodation office. You can hold the spare key for a maximum of 2 weeks. Outside the office hours the maintenance men of the Student village take care of opening locked doors. You can reach the on-call maintenance man at 014 607 500. A fee is charged for opening a door. If you lose your key permanently, notify the Accommodation office. The maintenance man as well the Accommodation office will always see your id-card in case of key problems. Do you provide any kind of home insurance for Student village tenants? Yes, we do. All JYY members living in the Student village are covered through a basic home insurance. The insurance, however, comes with certain limitations. Remember to carefully review the details before making any changes to other insurances you might have. It’s only possible to end your tenancy at the end of the month. Ending tenancy must always be done in writing and the written notice delivered to the Accommodation office. Paying the rent continues to be your responsibility until the end of the month following the date you gave notice on. E.g. if you give notice on April 20th, you will still need to pay the rent for the month of May. For more information on ending your tenancy and the official form, click here.
