The reason for the existence of the Kortepohja Student village is to ensure that the students of the University of Jyväskylä could live close to the University, in an environment supporting their studies, in a community formed by the students of the University of Jyväskylä.

The services closely connected to the Student village are JYY Accommodation and Financial services, the maintenance of JYY-Palvelut Ltd. and the Recreational Secretary of the Student village. The personnel works to make sure that living in the Student village runs smoothly, that the practical and administrative side of living is taken care of, that the Student village stays clean and in condition and that there is plenty to do in your spare time.

The Kortepohja Student village is owned by JYY, the Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä. In practice the tenants of the Student village are at the same time the "owners" of the village, as the tenants of the village must be members of JYY. The Student Union is a beneficiary organization of the students of the University of Jyväskylä and offers services helping the studies, such as apartments in the form of the Student village. The highest decision maker in the Student village is the annually elected Tenants' Council.

The construction of the Kortepohja Student village began in the middle of the 1960s in order to solve the problem of finding apartments for the students of the Jyväskylä Educational College, the predecessor of the University of Jyväskylä. Through some colorful events the first houses were finished in 1968, when also the name of the University of Jyväskylä had already been taken to use. The first houses to be finished were the five tower buildings and three family houses. The construction of the Student village continued until 1975, when more family houses and shared apartment houses were built. The official opening year for the Student village was 1976. In 1990 R- and S-houses were built, reason being the ever increasing amount of students in the University of Jyväskylä. Until the 1990s some of the single room apartments functioned as "companion apartments", where two tenants shared one room. The time of tenancy was also limited. The tenants moved first into the companion apartments, then to the shared apartments and only in the last studying years into the single room apartments, if family apartment was not needed. Nowadays it is possible to get a single room apartment in the best case after one year of studies.
In 2004-2005 JYY built three new buildings in Vehkakuja. The official name of the apartment blocks is Asunto Oy Jyväskylän Jyy-Asunnot. The houses in Vehkakuja are officially not a part of the Student village, but the practical connection is strong. The JYY Accommodation and Financial Services and the administration of the JYY-Palvelut Ltd. are located in Vehkakuja.

Throughout its existence, the Kortepohja Student village has been affected by a strong sense of community. The area of the Student village has been like a nest to the students of the University of Jyväskylä. In the Student village it has been easy to integrate to the university life, get to know students from different faculties and share the joys and sorrows or student life with new friends. The tenants of the Student village enjoy their living and appreciate the good sides: a short distance to the University, sport facilities close by, the closeness of nature, the plentiness of saunas and laundry rooms, the lovely views and the closeness of friends. It has even been heard, that people have fallen in love in the Student village...

The architecture of the Kortepohja Student village has its friends and critics. The community ideal of the seventies shaped the solutions of the architects in the planning phase of the Student village. In the 1990s, as the Student village was renovated and new houses built, especially the shared apartments and the single room apartments were modernized and renovated to fullfill the individual needs of tenants. The twenty first century has brought new challenges to guarantee the living standards of students. The challenges are gladly met by the Student Union. The Kortepohja Student village is a happy manifestation of retro spirit: there is light in the apartments, colorful curtains hang in the windows, the furniture might be well used but also well tested, and the yards resembling parks are perfect spots to get a nice tan in the summer, clean your carpets or have a nice barbecue. The condition of the Student village is observed regurarly and the necessary repairs and modernizations will be made when needed. One thing is for sure - there is no place like Kortepohja Student village in the whole Finland!
